Seamless Pipe vs Welded Pipe: What's the Difference?

Date:2023-06-06    keywords: seamless pipe, welded pipe, seamless pipe purchase
Steel pipe is a relatively common pipe material. It can be divided into different types such as seamless pipe and welded pipe. So what is the difference between seamless pipe and welded pipe? Next, the carbon steel pipe supplier will briefly introduce to you.

1) What is the difference between seamless pipe and welded pipe?

1. Different process
The seamless pipe is made by perforating the billet or solid tube embryo, and then undergoing hot rolling or cold rolling. Welded pipes are made by bending and welding steel plates or strips.

2. Different appearance
There are no seams on the surface of seamless pipes. There are generally welded seams on the surface of the welded pipe.

3. Different raw materials
Seamless pipes use billets or solid tube blanks. Welded pipes use steel plates or strips.

4. Different wall thickness
The precision of the seamless pipe is low, and the wall thickness is relatively thick. The steel pipe of the welded pipe has high precision, and the wall thickness is usually relatively thin.

5. Different performance
In terms of corrosion resistance, pressure bearing and high temperature resistance, seamless pipes are better than welded pipes.

6. Different functions
Seamless pipes are generally used as pipelines for conveying fluids in special environments such as high pressure resistance and high temperature resistance. Welded pipes are generally used as low-pressure fluid delivery pipelines.

7. Different prices

Seamless pipes are more expensive than welded pipes because the production process of seamless pipes is more complicated and its cost is higher.

8. Different physical properties
Seamless steel pipes are often used in high-pressure equipment because of their better carrying capacity than ordinary steel pipes. Such as hydraulic equipment, pipe connections, etc. The welding position of ordinary steel pipe is the weak link, and the quality of the weld is the main factor affecting its comprehensive performance. The physical properties of seamless steel pipes are better than those of welded pipes, and their compression resistance is higher. The welded pipes are generally about 10 MPa. Now welded pipes are seamlessly treated.

9. Different uses
Seamless steel pipes are generally used in factories; welded steel pipes are generally used in construction.
Seamless steel pipes are widely used. General-purpose seamless steel pipes are rolled by ordinary carbon structural steel, low-alloy structural steel or alloy structural steel, and have the largest output. They are mainly used as pipelines or structural parts for conveying fluids, such as petroleum geological drilling pipes and cracking for petrochemicals. Tubes, boiler tubes, bearing tubes and high-precision structural steel tubes for automobiles, tractors, and aviation.

Welded pipes are widely used in water supply engineering, petrochemical industry, chemical industry, power industry, agricultural irrigation, and urban construction.
Welded pipes are used for liquid transportation: water supply and drainage. Used for gas transportation: coal gas, steam, liquefied petroleum gas; used for structure: used as piling pipes, pipes for bridges, piers, roads, building structures, etc.

2) What should be paid attention to when purchasing carbon steel seamless pipes?

1. When purchasing carbon steel seamless pipes, everyone should check whether the specifications and models of seamless pipes meet the requirements. We can use a ruler to measure whether the length, curvature, wall thickness, etc. of the pipe are consistent with those marked in the product information. If there is an error, whether the error meets the requirements of the relevant standards.

2. When purchasing carbon steel seamless pipes, we need to pay attention to the quality of the steel pipes. For example, there should be no flaws such as cracks and scars on the surface of seamless pipes. Usually formal and qualified seamless pipes have a certificate of conformity, you can ask the merchant to show the certificate of conformity, and check whether the production date, batch number, factory name and other relevant information on the certificate of conformity are complete and so on.
