Black steel pipe is uncoated steel, also known as black steel. The dark color comes from iron oxide that forms on its surface during the manufacturing process. When a steel pipe is forged, a black scale forms on its surface, giving it the finish seen on this type of pipe.

Carbon steel pipe is made of steel ingots or solid round steel through perforation into capillary, and then made by hot rolling, cold rolling or cold drawing. Carbon steel pipe is the most common type of steel pipe. It is a steel pipe produced from carbon steel. Carbon steel pipes can be divided into seamless steel pipes, straight seam steel pipes and spiral steel pipes. Rolled seamless carbon steel pipe is made of steel ingot or solid round steel through perforation to make capillary, and then hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drawn.


Manufacturing process of seamless black steel pipe:

Black steel pipe is manufactured as seamless which makes it a better type for gas transportation. It can be used for fire sprinkler system since it can prevent fire better than galvanized pipe. Since it has a dark color surface that is form by iron oxide during the manufacturing process, it is called black steel pipe.

Black steel pipe's strength makes it ideal for transporting water and gas in rural and urban areas and for conduits that protect electrical wiring and for delivering high pressure steam and air. The oil and petroleum industries use black steel pipe for moving large quantities of oil through remote areas. This is beneficial, since black steel pipe requires very little maintenance. Other uses for black steel pipes include gas distribution inside and outside homes, water wells and sewage systems. Black steel pipes are never used for transporting potable water.


Manufacturing process of seamless carbon steel pipe:

The raw material of the carbon steel pipe is a round tube blank. The round tube blank is cut by a cutting machine into a blank with a length of about 1 meter, and then sent to the furnace for heating via a conveyor belt. The billet is fed into the furnace and heated at a temperature of approximately 1200 degrees Celsius. The fuel is hydrogen or acetylene. The temperature control in the furnace is a key issue. After the round tube is out of the furnace, it must be pierced through a pressure punching machine.Generally, the more common piercing machine is the tapered roller piercing machine. This type of piercing machine has high production efficiency, good product quality, large perforation diameter expansion, and can wear a variety of steel types. After piercing, the round tube billet is successively cross-rolled, continuous rolled or extruded by three rolls. After squeezing, take off the tube and calibrate. The sizing machine uses a tapered drill to rotate at a high speed into the steel blank to punch holes to form a steel pipe. The inner diameter of the steel pipe is determined by the length of the outer diameter of the drill bit of the sizing machine. After the steel pipe is sized, it enters the cooling tower and is cooled by spraying water. After the steel pipe is cooled, it will be straightened. After straightening, the steel pipe is sent to the metal flaw detector (or hydraulic test) by the conveyor belt for internal flaw detection. If there are cracks, bubbles, etc. inside the steel pipe, it will be detected. After the quality inspection of steel pipes, strict manual selection is required. After the quality inspection of the steel pipe, paint the serial number, specification, production batch number, etc. with paint. It is hoisted into the warehouse by a crane.

Applications of carbon steel pipes:

Carbon steel pipe is the earliest to use the largest amount of basic material in the modern industry. The world’s industrial countries, in attempts to increase high strength low alloy steel and alloy steel production, which is also very attention to improving the quality of carbon steel pipe and expanding the range of varieties and use. The proportion of carbon steel pipe production in the country’s’ total output of steel, approximately maintained at about 80%, it is not only widely used in buildings, bridges, railways, vehicles, ships and all kinds of machinery manufacturing industry, but also in the modern petrochemical industry, marine development, has also been heavily used.

How are seamless black steel pipes different from carbon steel pipes?

In general, black steel pipes and carbon steel pipes have almost the same procedures for welding. That is in the case of general welding, but not of some specific application like very cold temperatures. Black steel pipe is not really a specification but rather a generic term used primarily by plumbers to distinguish regular steel pipe from galvanized steel pipe.

Black steel pipes are cast from several grades of ductile or malleable iron, whereas carbon steel pipes are generally welded or seamless. Black steel pipes are used for underground or submerged applications as well as for mainstream pipes and branches subjected to acids. It is also common to use cast iron pipes and fittings for municipal cold-water lines 4″ diameter and above. Commercial die casting is unsuitable for lines subjected to expansion strains, contractions, and vibration unless the pipe is very heavy. It is not suitable for superheated steam or for temperatures above 575 degrees F. Cast iron pipes in underground applications (such as sewer lines) usually have bell and spigot ends whereas exposed pipes usually have flanged ends.
