SS ERW Pipe Specification

Date:2025-06-25    keywords: ss erw pipe, stainless steel pipe, erw pipe specification

What is stainless steel erw pipe?

SS ERW pipe, or electric resistance welded stainless steel pipe, is manufactured through the resistance welding process. It uses high-frequency current to generate resistance heat at both ends of the metal plate, so that the edge of the plate is quickly heated to the welding temperature, and then squeezed to form a strong weld, so that the metal plates can be connected into a circular pipe.

This welding method does not require the addition of any welding materials. The weld metal only undergoes a recrystallization process, and the chemical composition of the weld is completely consistent with that of the base material. Moreover, after annealing treatment after welding, the internal stress of cold processing and welding is improved, and the comprehensive mechanical properties are better. This process has high production efficiency, is suitable for mass production, and can effectively reduce production costs. It has been widely used in many fields, such as oil and natural gas transportation, building structures, machinery manufacturing, automobile industry, environmental protection engineering, etc.

1. Outer diameter

The outer diameter of stainless steel ERW pipes usually ranges from 1/2 "-24". In practical applications, small outer diameter stainless steel ERW pipes, such as 1/2 "-1" specifications, are often used in the manufacture of precision instruments, small machinery components, or small household water heating systems. Large outer diameters, such as 12 "-24" specifications, play a key role in the structural support of large buildings, large water and gas pipelines in cities, and provide guarantees for the stable operation of urban infrastructure.

2. Wall thickness

Its wall thickness is generally 1.65-20mm. The wall thickness has a great influence on the strength of the steel pipe. Steel pipes with thinner wall thickness, such as 1.65-3mm, are light in weight, low in cost, easy to install and transport, and suitable for ordinary building decoration fields with low strength requirements, such as indoor railings and handrails. Steel pipes with thicker wall thickness, such as 10-20mm, have high strength and strong pressure resistance, and can be used for high-pressure transmission pipelines of oil and natural gas, and can withstand greater pressure and harsh environments.

3. Length

The standard length is 3m-12m. Of course, the length can also be adjusted according to the order requirements. In some small decoration projects, shorter steel pipes may be required for easy handling and construction; in large industrial projects, longer steel pipes may be customized according to specific engineering designs to reduce connection points and improve the stability and sealing of the pipeline system. When customizing the length, it is generally necessary to communicate with the manufacturer in advance to explain the specific needs, and the manufacturer will produce according to the actual situation.

The importance of dimensional tolerances

1. Pipe body diameter tolerance

The pipe body diameter tolerance range is generally 0.75% D (D is the nominal diameter). In actual production, the pipe body diameter will have a certain deviation due to factors such as equipment accuracy and process stability. Strictly controlling the diameter tolerance can ensure the tightness of the connection between the steel pipe and the pipe fittings. For example, in the petrochemical pipeline system, when steel pipes of different diameters are connected to pipe fittings, if the diameter tolerance is too large, it will lead to poor sealing of the connection parts, causing leakage, affecting production safety and efficiency.

2. Wall thickness tolerance

The wall thickness tolerance of stainless steel ERW pipes is usually - 0.5mm, +1.0mm. Wall thickness tolerance has a great impact on the performance and safety of steel pipes. Uneven wall thickness will cause uneven stress distribution when the steel pipe is under pressure, reducing the bearing capacity of the steel pipe. For example, in a high-pressure water pipeline, if the wall thickness tolerance of the steel pipe exceeds the standard, the weak part may rupture due to the inability to withstand the pressure, causing serious water supply accidents.

Size selection for different application scenarios

In the field of oil and gas transportation, larger diameter stainless steel ERW pipes, such as 20"-24", are a common choice for long-distance transportation pipelines. A larger pipe diameter can reduce resistance during fluid transportation, improve transportation efficiency, and meet large-scale energy transportation needs. At the same time, depending on the delivery pressure and environment, the appropriate wall thickness will be selected, generally 8-20mm, to ensure that the pipeline can withstand high pressure and harsh natural environment, and ensure the safety and stability of energy delivery.

In the chemical industry, the size selection of stainless steel ERW pipes needs to comprehensively consider factors such as fluid properties, pressure and temperature. For the transportation of highly corrosive chemical fluids, stainless steel with good corrosion resistance will be selected. The pipe diameter is generally 4"-12" and the wall thickness is 3-10mm to meet different process requirements and ensure the service life of the pipeline in complex chemical environments.

In the field of building structures, stainless steel ERW pipes are mainly used for supporting structures and decorations of buildings. When used for load-bearing structures, appropriate pipe diameters and wall thicknesses are selected according to the design requirements and stress conditions of the building, such as 8"-16" pipe diameters and 5-15mm wall thicknesses, to ensure the strength and stability of the building structure. When used for building decorations, such as railings and handrails, small-diameter, thin-walled steel pipes are usually selected, such as 1"-3" pipe diameters and 1.65-3mm wall thicknesses, which not only meet aesthetic requirements but also ensure a certain degree of strength.

Conclusion

Stainless steel ERW pipes have many dimensional parameters. The outer diameter, wall thickness and length have different ranges and application scenarios. The dimensional tolerance also has an important impact on the performance and use of the steel pipe. In practical applications, it is very important to accurately select the appropriate size of stainless steel ERW pipes according to different engineering requirements. The appropriate size can not only ensure the quality and safety of the project and meet the use requirements under various working conditions, but also effectively control costs and avoid material waste and additional processing costs caused by inappropriate size. Therefore, when selecting stainless steel ERW pipes, you must fully understand the size-related information and make scientific and reasonable decisions.
