OCTG, short for "Oil Country Tubular Goods," is a key piece of equipment used in oil and gas extraction. Its core material is mostly seamless pipe, designed for complex underground working conditions thanks to its high strength and corrosion resistance. OCTG products primarily include casing pipe, tubing pipe , and drill pipe. OCTG casing stabilizes the wellbore and isolates formation fluids after being lowered into the wellbore, while OCTG drill pipe serves as the "power transmission core" of drilling operations and is an indispensable tool in oil and gas extraction.

 

In oil exploration and development, OCTG drill pipe is connected to the drill bit at one end, transmitting torque and axial force to drive rock breaking and well drilling. As a hollow seamless pipe, it also transports drilling fluid to the bottom of the well, cooling the drill bit, carrying cuttings, and balancing formation pressure to prevent wellbore collapse. OCTG drill pipe material and structure

 

OCTG drill pipe primarily consists of a pipe body and joints. The pipe body, typically made of specialized steel pipe and typically ranging in length from 3 to 6 meters, is the main component of the drill pipe, responsible for transmitting torque and axial force while also providing a channel for the delivery of drilling fluid. Joints connect the drill pipe bodies and are typically forged or cast. These joints are threaded together to form a long drill string that extends deep into the ground.

 

OCTG drill pipe is typically made of high-quality alloy steel, with chromium-molybdenum being a common example. These alloys possess exceptional strength and toughness. The strength ensures the drill pipe withstands significant torque, axial forces, and drilling fluid pressure without deformation or fracture. The toughness effectively prevents brittle fracture in complex and variable formation conditions, such as hard rock layers and impactful geological structures. This significantly increases the drill pipe's reliability and service life, allowing it to adapt to diverse drilling environments and operational requirements.

OCTG drill pipe plays a key role in oil and gas drilling: the surface drilling rig transmits torque to the drill pipe through equipment. The drill pipe then transmits torque and axial force to the drill bit, similar to the force transmitted by a screwdriver, allowing the drill bit's "tip" to break rock. After the drill bit rotates and pressurizes the rock, the cuttings are carried back to the surface by drilling fluid pumped through the inner bore of the drill pipe, along the annular space between the drill pipe and the wellbore wall. The drill pipe continuously transmits force and cooperates with the drilling fluid to gradually complete the drilling process.

1. International core standard: API Spec 5D

The most widely used drill pipe in the world, it clearly defines key requirements: the material must be high-strength alloy steel such as N80 and L80, and the tensile strength and impact toughness must meet the standards; the connection method between the pipe body and the joint (internal/external upset) and the thread type (API REG, FH, etc.) are specified; non-destructive testing (ultrasonic, magnetic particle inspection) and hydrostatic testing are required to detect defects.

 

2. International supplementary standard: ISO 11960

Its full name is "Specification for Casing, Tubing and Drill Pipe in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry". Its technical requirements are similar to API Spec 5D. It is a globally used auxiliary standard that meets the needs of international oil and gas project collaboration.

 

3. Domestic mainstream standard: GB/T 22512-2019

With reference to API Spec 5D, some inspection methods were adjusted in combination with the characteristics of domestic steel production to clarify the material, performance, structure and inspection requirements of drill pipe. It is applicable to domestic oil and gas field drilling operations and ensures the safety of local projects.

 

Application areas of OCTG drill pipe

 

OCTG drill pipe is widely used in the oil and gas sector, with onshore oil and gas drilling being one of its primary applications. Drill pipe plays a critical role in vast onshore oil fields, from my country's Daqing Oilfield to the desert oilfields of the Middle East. Drilling rigs use drill pipe to propel the drill bit thousands of meters underground to search for oil and gas resources, supporting the exploration and development of most onshore oil and gas fields worldwide.

 

OCTG drill pipe is also indispensable in offshore oil and gas drilling. Offshore drilling platforms stand like a steel fortress on the vast ocean. Drill pipes, propelled from the platforms, penetrate thick layers of seawater and penetrate deep into the seabed strata. For example, in the development of my country's South China Sea oil and gas fields, drill pipes have overcome numerous challenges, including corrosion from seawater, the impact of waves, and complex seabed geology, in complex marine environments. They have made significant contributions to the recovery of valuable marine oil and gas resources and are a core piece of equipment for offshore oil and gas extraction.

 

Maintenance and care points for OCTG drill pipe

 

There are four things to keep in mind when maintaining OCTG drill pipe: First, clean it promptly after use by using a high-pressure water gun and detergent to remove drilling fluid and rock cuttings to prevent corrosion; second, inspect it regularly to check for surface cracks and wear, with a focus on checking the joint threads and seals, and replace bad parts in a timely manner; third, apply grease to threads and other parts (such as applying thread oil when connecting) to reduce wear; fourth, store it in a dry and ventilated place, and apply rust inhibitor to prevent moisture and corrosion.
