What is MS square tube?

MS square tube, also known as mild steel square tube, is a hollow structural profile (HSS) made of mild steel. It is a square metal tube commonly used in construction, engineering and various industrial applications. It is characterized by high strength, light weight, good corrosion resistance, easy processing, weldability, etc. In the construction and manufacturing world, it is crucial to understand the material grade of MS square tubes. These versatile components are widely used in various industries due to their structural integrity and durability. Below, PMC delves into the intricate details of the MS square tube material grade, elucidating its composition, properties and diverse applications.

Square tube material:
Square tubes are made of a wide variety of materials, and common materials include carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, etc. Among them, carbon steel is the most commonly used material. According to different carbon content, it can be divided into ordinary carbon structural steel and high-quality carbon structural steel. Low carbon steel (mild steel) is an ordinary carbon structural steel with a carbon content generally between 0.05% and 0.25%. Square tubes can be divided into two types: seamless square tubes and welded square tubes according to the production process. According to different cross-sectional shapes, they can be divided into rectangular tubes and square tubes.

Characteristics of mild steel:
Mild steel usually refers to carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. It is also called mild steel because of its low strength, low hardness and softness. It includes most ordinary carbon structural steel and some high-quality carbon structural steel. Most of them are used for engineering structural parts without heat treatment, and some are used for mechanical parts requiring wear resistance after carburizing and other heat treatments.

The annealed structure of low carbon steel is ferrite and a small amount of pearlite, which has lower strength and hardness and better plasticity and toughness. Therefore, it has good cold formability and can be cold formed by curling, bending, stamping and other methods. In addition, this steel has good weldability.

MS square tube material grade classification:

Material grades of MS square tubes are typically classified based on their chemical composition and mechanical properties. The two main grades are ASTM A36 and ASTM A572.

ASTM A36: This grade has a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi and offers excellent formability. It is typically used in structural applications where precision engineering is not a priority.

ASTM A572: This grade has a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi and is known for its higher strength compared to A36. It finds its place in more demanding applications, such as heavily loaded bearing structures.

Mechanical properties:

MS square tubes exhibit excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. These properties include:

1. Tensile strength: The ability to withstand tensile force without deforming or breaking.
2. Yield Strength: The point at which a material begins to deform under applied stress.
3. Elongation: The percentage increase in length of a material when it is subjected to tension.
4. Modulus of elasticity: Reflects the ability of a material to elastically deform under pressure and return to its original shape after release.

Advantages of using MS square tube:

1. Material: MS square tube is made of mild steel, a type of mild steel known for its durability and strength and popular in various industries.
2. Shape: As the name suggests, MS square tube has a square cross-section. They are available in various sizes and thicknesses to meet different requirements.
3. Hollow structure: MS square tube is hollow internally, which makes it light in weight while maintaining structural strength. This design helps reduce the overall weight of the structure.
4. Corrosion resistance: Although it is not completely immune to corrosion, proper coating and maintenance can significantly extend its service life.
5. Low cost: Compared with other steel materials, mild steel is relatively cheap and easy to obtain, making it a budget-friendly option for a variety of projects, and its lower carbon content can also reduce environmental pollution.
6. Weldable: Mild steel is easy to weld, allowing the use of MS square tubes to manufacture various structures and frames, achieving seamless connections and strong joints
7. Mechanical properties: It has good plasticity and toughness, can be manufactured into various shapes, and has high strength and hardness.
8. Versatility: MS square tubes are widely used in construction, infrastructure, automobiles and even furniture manufacturing due to their adaptability.

Maintenance and corrosion protection:

While MS square pipe offers multiple advantages, its susceptibility to corrosion must be addressed. Over time, corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of pipes. To mitigate this situation, several maintenance and protection methods can be employed:

1. Coating: Applying a protective coating such as paint, zinc or epoxy can effectively protect pipes from moisture and corrosive elements. Regular inspection and re-applying of coatings is necessary to ensure continued protection.
2. Galvanized: Galvanized MS square pipe is coated with a layer of zinc to enhance corrosion resistance. These pipes are typically used outdoors and in humid environments.
3. Maintenance Plan: It is crucial to have a maintenance plan that includes cleaning, inspections, and potential repairs. Prompt rust removal and addressing any signs of deterioration can extend the life of your pipes.

Application of MS square tube:

The application of MS square tube covers many industries:
1. Construction: Due to its strength and load-bearing capacity, MS square tubes are often used in building frames, support columns and other structural elements in construction projects.
2. Infrastructure: MS square pipe plays a pivotal role in the construction of bridges, overpasses and highways.
3. Fences: They are used in fencing applications to provide a strong and secure perimeter to a property.
4. Automotive: In some cases, MS square tubes are used in the automotive industry to make components such as roll cages and chassis components.
5. Industrial Machinery: These pipes are also used in manufacturing industrial machinery and equipment.
6. Furniture: MS square tubes are used to make furniture frames such as tables, chairs and shelves due to their durability and versatility, and can be used to make sturdy and stylish furniture designs.

Properties and Performance:

The material properties of MS Square Tube have a great influence on its overall performance and suitability for various projects:
1. Ductility: Mild steel has excellent ductility, allowing it to be easily formed into different shapes without sacrificing its structural integrity. This property is especially valuable when crafting complex designs or unique structures.
2. Thermal conductivity: MS square tube has high thermal conductivity and is suitable for applications involving heat transfer. They can be used in heating systems, heat exchangers, and even industrial ovens.
3. Electrical conductivity: The electrical conductivity of mild steel makes it a viable option for applications that require the transmission of electrical current. It is used in the construction of utility poles, wiring conduits and grounding systems.
4. Sound absorption: MS square tube has sound absorption properties and is very valuable for projects that require noise reduction. They can be used in acoustic enclosures, barriers and soundproofing solutions.

Choose the right material grade for your project:

Choosing the right material grade for your project is crucial. Factors to consider include required carrying capacity, environmental conditions and overall budget.

1. Load-carrying capacity: Evaluates the maximum load a structure or component will bear. Choose a material grade that matches the required strength to ensure safety and structural integrity.
2. Environmental conditions: Evaluate the usage environment of the pipeline. If exposed to harsh weather conditions or corrosive substances, choose a material grade with higher corrosion resistance.
3. Aesthetics and Design: If your project involves aesthetics and intricate designs, choose a material grade that is easily malleable and can be molded to your requirements.
4. Budget Constraints: While MS Square Tubing is known for its affordability, consider your budget constraints and choose a material grade that balances cost and performance.

Innovation and development trends:
As technology and materials science continue to advance, there are ongoing efforts to enhance the performance of MS square tubes. Researchers and engineers are exploring ways to develop composite materials that combine the benefits of mild steel with additional properties such as enhanced corrosion resistance, higher strength and improved thermal properties.
