A request for quotation (RFQ) is the document a buyer sends to suppliers to get a price for a defined product. In a seamless steel pipe RFQ, the technical specification is what defines that product. If the grade, standard, size, or wall thickness is missing, the supplier has to guess or ask follow-up questions, which slows the quotation and can produce prices that cannot be compared. This article covers the product information a buyer should include when requesting a quotation for seamless steel pipe.

State the material type, the grade, and the applicable standard together. For example:
Written together, this becomes "ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipe."
Avoid writing only "carbon steel seamless pipe." That description fits many grades and standards, and the supplier cannot tell which one you need. Each combination has different chemical and mechanical requirements, so the price and available stock may differ as well.
If your project allows equivalent grades, say so in the RFQ. Otherwise suppliers will normally quote exactly what is written.
Seamless pipe size is usually given in one of two ways:
NPS and Schedule: NPS 4 × SCH 40
OD and wall thickness: OD 114.3 mm × WT 6.02 mm
NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is a size designation, not a measured dimension. Outside diameter (OD) is the actual measured dimension, and it stays fixed within each NPS size. Wall thickness then changes with the schedule number or the stated value in millimeters.
Do not write only "4-inch seamless pipe." Without wall thickness or Schedule, the supplier cannot determine the weight, the material required, or the price.
In a seamless pipe RFQ, state the length type and the quantity clearly.
Length options:
Fixed length: for example, 6 m per piece
Random length: lengths vary within a range allowed by the standard
Quantity examples:
500 pcs × 6 m
20 tons, random length
Always state the unit: pieces, meters, or tons. "500" on its own could mean 500 pieces or 500 meters, and the two produce very different quotations. If you give the quantity in tons, add the size and wall thickness so the supplier can calculate the piece count accurately.
Some seamless pipe requirements change what the supplier needs to produce or supply. Includes those that apply:
Plain ends: cut square, with no further preparation
Beveled ends: prepared for welding
Threaded ends: with or without couplings
Couplings: state if they are required and in what quantity
Heat treatment: only if you require something specific beyond the standard
Surface requirements: such as black, varnished, or galvanized, if applicable
If the standard already defines a default condition, you can write "as required by the standard." Only add extra requirements when your project needs them.
Testing affects the supplier's cost and supply scope, so state what you need at the RFQ stage. Common items include:
Hydrostatic testing: state whether it is required and whether the standard's default applies
Non-destructive testing (NDT): such as ultrasonic or eddy current, if required
Mechanical testing: tensile, flattening, or bend tests
Chemical analysis: heat analysis or product analysis
Third-party inspection: name the agency, if you have a specific one
Testing beyond the standard's default requirements, and any third-party inspection, should be stated up front so the supplier can include the cost in the quotation. Adding them after the quotation usually means a revised price. For more on inspection scope, see Steel Pipe Inspection.

A clear seamless steel pipe RFQ should tell the supplier the material grade, standard, size, wall thickness, length, and quantity. Depending on the project, add end type, testing requirements, and required documents. Any detail you omit becomes the supplier's assumption, and that is where quotations start to differ. The clearer the specifications, the easier it is for suppliers to prepare an accurate and comparable steel pipe quotation.
