What are hot-expanded seamless steel pipes?

Hot-expanded steel pipes are large-diameter seamless steel pipes produced by expanding small-diameter steel pipes through skew rolling or drawing methods. Their mechanical properties are slightly lower than hot-rolled steel pipes, but due to the flexibility in customizing specifications, they have become an important product for solving the domestic shortage of large-diameter steel pipes. They are mainly used in fluid transportation, oil and gas, chemical, and power industries.

Hot-expanded seamless steel pipes are variable-diameter steel pipes made from qualified mother pipes using a combination of medium-frequency heating and hydraulic pushing technology. The production process controls parameters such as temperature, speed, and diameter reduction rate to expand small-diameter steel pipes into large-diameter products, offering advantages such as wide applicability of raw material specifications and low energy consumption.

Are hot-expanded seamless steel pipes suitable for pressure pipeline projects?

Hot-expanded seamless steel pipes have certain applicability in pressure pipeline projects.

Hot-expanded seamless steel pipes have uniform wall thickness and a dense microstructure, enabling them to withstand certain pressures. Its manufacturing process ensures good strength and toughness, making it suitable for pipeline engineering scenarios with medium to low pressure requirements. For example, in pressure pipelines for transporting ordinary industrial fluids, hot-expanded seamless pipes can operate stably and effectively transport media.

However, its applicability is also limited by various factors. For pipeline projects with high pressure requirements and complex operating conditions, its material properties and design standards must be comprehensively considered.

A rigorous evaluation must be conducted based on specific pressure values and media characteristics. If the pressure is too high or the pipeline operating conditions are special, additional protective measures or the selection of different pipe materials may be necessary. Therefore, it cannot be said in general that hot-expanded seamless pipes are suitable or unsuitable for pressure pipeline projects. Instead, a comprehensive analysis, combined with actual project requirements, is needed to carefully determine whether it meets the requirements and ensure the safe and reliable operation of the pipeline system.

Manufacturing Process: 

The manufacturing process of hot-expanded seamless steel pipes typically involves several key steps. First, raw materials are selected, namely standard seamless steel pipes, requiring uniform material and no defects. Then, the steel pipe is heated to a certain temperature to reach a ductile state; this temperature depends on the steel grade and is generally in the range of several hundred degrees Celsius. Next, using expanding equipment, such as a pipe expander, radial force is applied to the heated steel pipe to gradually increase its diameter. After expansion, the steel pipe needs to undergo cooling treatment to stabilize its structure and properties. Inspection and finishing are performed to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality. The entire process requires precise control of temperature and time to avoid overheating or uneven deformation.


Advantages and Limitations:

The advantages of hot-expanded seamless steel pipes include: the ability to produce large-diameter pipes without welding, thus reducing weaknesses; relatively flexible processes that can adapt to different size requirements; and optimized material properties through hot working. However, it also has limitations, such as higher production costs due to the involvement of heating and precision equipment; strict process control is required, otherwise cracks or uneven deformation are likely to occur; and dimensional expansion may affect wall thickness uniformity, requiring subsequent processing to compensate.

Hot-expanded seamless steel pipe is a practical industrial material that expands the application range of seamless steel pipe through hot working. Understanding its manufacturing, characteristics, and applications helps to better utilize this technology. In the future, with advancements in technology, it may play a role in even more fields.
