Will Galvanized Steel Pipes Rust? What to do after Rusting?

Date:2024-08-02    keywords: galvanized steel pipes, steel pipes

Will galvanized steel pipes rust?

When the steel pipe is exposed to the air, it undergoes an oxidation reaction with oxygen, or is corroded by oxygen in the water into oxides and rusts. Galvanized steel pipe forms a galvanized layer to isolate the air, making it more corrosion-resistant and less likely to rust. Will galvanized pipes rust?

Generally speaking, galvanized steel pipes are just not prone to rust, which does not mean they will not rust. It’s just a matter of time. Galvanized pipes will still rust after being used for a long time. In addition, if the environment is humid or rains for a long time, galvanized steel pipes will quickly oxidize, causing spots and rust.

In addition, there are two types of galvanized steel pipes: hot-dip galvanized pipes and cold-dip galvanized pipes. Relatively speaking, hot-dip galvanized pipes are less likely to rust than cold-dip galvanized pipes.

How long does it take for galvanized steel pipes to rust?

The corrosion time of galvanized steel pipes is mainly related to the galvanizing method, galvanizing layer thickness, galvanizing amount, usage environment and other factors. Generally, cold galvanized pipes corrode quickly. Cold-dip galvanized steel pipes have low galvanizing content and only galvanized on the outside. If the steel pipe is not galvanized, the amount of zinc on one side is about 20g/㎡, and it is easy to rust.

Generally speaking, under normal use conditions, cold-dip galvanized steel pipes will rust in about a year. If the thickness is thicker, the rusting time will be extended, 2-3 years below 2.75mm, 3-5 years above 3.0mm.

How to remove rust from galvanized steel pipes?

1. Clean the steel surface with solvent to remove surface organic matter.

2. Then use tools such as wire brushes to remove rust, mainly loosening or tilting rust, welding slag, etc.

3. Use pickling to clean galvanized pipes, and the rust stains on them are almost clean.
