Research on the causes of carbon steel pipe (CS pipe) corrosion

1. Electrochemical corrosion
Electrochemical corrosion is the most common form of corrosion of carbon steel pipes. It is usually caused by a chemical reaction between the metal surface and substances in the medium, causing the metal surface to lose electrons and be corroded. For example, in oxygen-containing water, electrons flow from carbon steel pipes to oxygen. Since the oxygen contains other substances, electron transfer will lead to the formation of corrosion products, eventually leading to pipeline corrosion and damage.

2. Chemical corrosion

Chemical corrosion is corrosion caused by the chemical action of chemical media on the metal on the surface of the pipeline. The chemical media can be liquid or gaseous. Usually, chemical corrosion mainly occurs in environments with strong acid, strong alkali or containing chemicals such as chloride and ammonia. The chemical composition of carbon steel pipe materials gives it certain corrosion resistance, but in some special environments, chemical corrosion may still occur.

3. Microbial corrosion
Microbial corrosion is corrosion caused by the biological action of various microorganisms on the metal on the surface of the pipeline. Microorganisms can decompose pipe materials and corrode pipe surfaces, seriously affecting their performance. This type of corrosion usually occurs in pipes that have been exposed to water or soil containing microorganisms for a long time.

4. Stress corrosion
Stress corrosion is a form of pipe corrosion caused by internal stress acting on the metal surface. Normally, the inside of the pipeline is subjected to some forces during transportation, causing stress areas in the pipeline. These stress areas are then acted upon by the medium, causing chemical reactions, leading to corrosion. This kind of corrosion is very dangerous and can easily cause pipeline breakage and damage, causing great economic and safety losses.

Conclusion:
The above four reasons are the main factors leading to corrosion of carbon steel pipes. By studying various factors, appropriate solutions can be taken to prevent and solve corrosion problems. For example, for electrochemical corrosion, methods such as coating and cathodic protection can be used; for chemical corrosion, anti-corrosion pipe materials can be used; for microbial corrosion, regular cleaning and spraying of fungicides can be used; for stress corrosion, stress reduction annealing can be used and other methods.

It is worth noting that preventing and solving corrosion problems requires considering a variety of factors and selecting appropriate methods and solutions to ensure the service life and safety of carbon steel pipes.
