Thin-walled Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe

Date:2025-06-09    keywords: seamless carbon steel pipe, cs pipe, seamless pipe

What is a thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipe?

Thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipe refers to a carbon steel pipe produced by a seamless process (such as cold rolling, cold drawing or hot extrusion), with a small ratio of wall thickness to pipe diameter (usually wall thickness/outer diameter < 0.05). Since there is no weld, its structure is uniform and suitable for scenes with high requirements for precision, lightness and surface quality.

Characteristics of thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipe

Light weight: Compared with solid steel, thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes are lighter due to their hollow structure when the bending and torsional strength are the same. This feature makes it very popular in fields such as aerospace and automobile manufacturing that have strict requirements on weight.

High strength: Through reasonable material selection and advanced processing technology, thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes have high strength, can withstand greater pressure and tension, and meet the needs of various engineering structures.

High precision: Thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes produced by cold rolling or cold drawing have high dimensional accuracy and uniform wall thickness, which can meet some application scenarios with strict requirements on dimensional accuracy, such as the manufacture of precision instruments.

Better corrosion resistance: Although not as good as stainless steel pipes, after proper surface treatment such as galvanizing, painting, etc., thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes can have a certain degree of corrosion resistance and can be used in some less corrosive environments to extend their service life.

Thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipe of basic parameters

Common specifications of thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes are rich and varied. The outer diameter is generally between 6mm and 820mm. For example, in the manufacture of small mechanical parts, steel pipes with an outer diameter of about 20mm may be used to make precision shaft parts. In large-scale pipeline projects, steel pipes with an outer diameter of 300mm or even larger are used to transport various fluids.

The wall thickness is usually in the range of 0.25mm - 15mm. For liquid transportation pipelines that are subject to lower pressure, a thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipe with a wall thickness of about 3mm can meet the needs; if it is used in a high-pressure environment, such as some pipelines in the petrochemical industry, a steel pipe with a wall thickness of more than 10mm may be required to ensure safety.

In terms of length, the common ones are 6m, 9m, 12m, etc., and of course they can also be customized according to customer needs. In construction, standard length steel pipes are convenient for building scaffolding and other structures; in some special engineering scenarios, customized length steel pipes can better meet actual installation needs, reduce material waste and splicing workload.

Seamless carbon steel pipe production process

Selection of raw materials: High-quality carbon steel is used as the production raw material. Common carbon steel grades include No. 10 and No. 20. These steels need to be strictly inspected before being put into production to ensure that their chemical composition and mechanical properties meet the standard requirements.

Heating and piercing: The selected solid steel billet is heated to 1100℃ - 1200℃ to give it good plasticity. The heated steel billet is fed into the piercing machine. Under the action of the high-speed rotating rollers and the mandrel, a small hole is pierced in the center of the steel billet to form a rough tube. This process determines the initial shape of the steel pipe and the internal hollow structure.

Rolling forming: The rough tube will be further rolled, which is divided into hot rolling and cold rolling (cold drawing) according to different production processes. Hot rolling is the process of rolling the rough tube at high temperature to extend it and reduce the wall to achieve the required outer diameter and wall thickness. Cold rolling (cold drawing) is carried out at room temperature. The rough tube is pulled or rolled through a die, which can make the steel tube obtain higher dimensional accuracy and surface quality. It is often used to produce high-precision, small-size steel tubes.

Heat treatment strengthening: The steel pipe must be heat treated after rolling, and common processes include normalizing and tempering.

Quality inspection and packaging: After going through multiple production processes, steel pipes must undergo strict quality inspections, including dimensional measurement, using tools such as vernier calipers and micrometers to check whether the outer diameter, wall thickness, length, etc. of the steel pipes meet the standards;

Typical application areas of thin-walled seamless steel pipes

Precision machinery: hydraulic system thin tubes, bearing sleeves.
Automotive industry: fuel pipes, brake pipes, exhaust pipes (parts).
Home appliances and electronics: air conditioning condenser tubes, printer rollers.
Medical equipment: stainless steel composite thin-walled tubes (such as CT machine brackets).

Decoration engineering: handrails, display racks, lamp frames.

Notes on thin-walled tube selection:

1. Thin-walled tubes are preferred: when the demand is lightweight, precision processing, and low pressure (such as furniture, electronic equipment).
2. Avoid overpressure: thin-walled tubes have limited pressure bearing (≤10MPa), and thick-walled tubes can reach more than 30MPa, and the working pressure needs to be strictly calculated.

3. Surface treatment: If used in a humid environment, galvanizing or plastic coating is recommended for rust prevention.

Thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes are an ideal choice for light industry, automobiles, and home appliances due to their high precision, easy processing, and economy. The use of thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes requires strict evaluation of working conditions to strike a balance between lightweight, high-precision requirements and mechanical properties. For key pressure-bearing parts, it is recommended to give priority to thick-walled tubes or stainless steel materials.

Conclusion

Thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes play an important role in many fields such as construction, machinery manufacturing, petrochemicals, and automobile manufacturing due to their light weight, high strength, high precision, and good corrosion resistance. It has rich specifications and parameters, and the production process is rigorous and complex. From the selection of raw materials to the final quality inspection and packaging, every link is strictly controlled to ensure that the product quality meets high standards. With the continuous advancement of industrial technology, the application prospects of thin-walled seamless carbon steel pipes will be broader, and they will continue to provide solid support for the development of various industries and promote industrial production to new heights.
