Differences between ERW Pipe and Seamless Pipe and their Different Applications

There are differences in the production process and physical properties between carbon steel ERW pipes and carbon steel seamless pipes (cs smls pipes). Below we will introduce the differences between ERW steel pipes and seamless pipes from these two aspects.

1. Production process
The production process of ERW pipes generally adopts welding process. Welded steel pipes are made by bending steel strips or steel plates into the required shape and then going through processes such as welding, heat treatment and mechanical processing. Carbon steel ERW pipes are mainly used to transport low-pressure liquids and gases, such as tap water, gas, air conditioning water pipes, etc. Carbon steel ERW pipes are also widely used in construction materials, machinery manufacturing, power chemical industry and other fields. Compared with seamless steel pipes, ERW steel pipes are more affordable and suitable for some economically limited occasions.

2. Application scenarios of seamless pipes
Seamless pipes are mainly used in transportation pipelines and equipment under high pressure, high temperature and special environments. Specifically, seamless pipes are widely used in petroleum, natural gas, chemical industry, electric power, aerospace, pharmaceutical and other fields. In some special industries, such as the nuclear energy industry, seamless steel pipes are an indispensable material.

In short, there are differences in the production process and performance of seamless steel pipes and ERW steel pipes, and each has its own applicable scenarios. Different pipe materials can be selected according to different needs to better meet engineering requirements.


Tips: ASTM A53 Grade B is more popular than other grades. These pipes can be bare pipes without any coating, or it may be Hot-Dipped or Zinc-Coated and manufactured by Welding or by a Seamless manufacturing process. In Oil and Gas, A53 grade pipes are used in the structural and non-critical applications.
