Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe VS Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

Date:2023-11-08    keywords: carbon steel seamless pipe vs stainless steel seamless pipe, ss seamless pipe, cs smls pipe
What are carbon steel seamless pipes and stainless steel seamless pipes?

Seamless steel pipes refer to steel pipes without welds, which are characterized by being less prone to oil or gas leakage. Carbon steel seamless pipes are composed of carbon and iron elements and have the characteristics of high strength and low price. Stainless steel seamless pipes are made of stainless steel materials, which have the characteristics of high temperature resistance to oxidation, corrosion resistance, and high tensile strength. When choosing seamless pipes, you need to choose different materials according to specific use occasions and needs.

Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe VS Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

1. Chemical composition

Carbon steel seamless pipes are mainly composed of iron and carbon, with the carbon content ranging from 0.06-1.5%, and also containing small amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus and other elements.

Stainless steel seamless pipes are mainly composed of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and other elements, and also contain small amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon and other elements. Adding chromium to steel can improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Therefore, the chemical composition of stainless steel pipes is more complex than that of carbon steel pipes.

2. Corrosion resistance
Due to the stainless steel material used, stainless steel seamless pipes have good corrosion resistance and can maintain surface brightness and integrity for a long time. Because it contains elements such as chromium, a dense chromium oxide film is formed, which can prevent oxygen, water and other external substances from entering the interior of the metal, thereby preventing oxidation and corrosion.

Carbon steel seamless pipes do not have this corrosion resistance and have poor corrosion resistance. They usually require coating protection to prevent corrosion.

3. Mechanical strength
Carbon steel pipe is a kind of pipe with good mechanical properties, high strength and wear resistance, so it is often used in manufacturing parts of mechanical equipment.
The mechanical properties of stainless steel pipes are relatively poor, mainly because they contain more alloy elements, which can easily lead to particle precipitation, grain boundary corrosion and other problems.

4. Price
Since stainless steel seamless pipes are made of stainless steel, their cost is relatively high. Carbon steel seamless pipes have low raw material costs and simple production processes, so their prices are relatively low. Therefore, in situations with lower requirements such as low pressure and low temperature, carbon steel pipes can achieve higher economic benefits.

5. Application

Stainless steel seamless pipes are mainly used in chemical equipment, pharmaceutical equipment, sewage treatment equipment, etc. in industrial places; while carbon steel seamless pipes are more used to transport water, gas, etc.
